HIDOEHIFIT

The Hawai‘i Facilities Inspection Tool (HI-FIT) is vital to ensuring that Hawaii’s schools are clean, safe, and functional, and that school facilities and sound maintenance practices continue to provide a positive contribution to teaching and learning. HI–FIT inspectors access every room on a school campus and evaluates the conditions of both interior and exterior building conditions, building systems, and cleanliness. Intended as a visual inspection tool, HI–FIT uses a rating system to evaluate various components of learning and administrative environments and overall condition of school facilities.

The HI-FIT scorecards are shown with a 10 point scale for all sections. 10-8 is good, 8-6 is fair, 6-4 is poor, and 4-1 is critical.

Who is HI-FIT for?

HI-FIT has several audiences: (1) Schools, (2) HIDOE Facilities, (3) District Project Coordinators - DPCs, and (4) Government officials.
How does HI-FIT help my school?

The HI-FIT assessment is a neutral platform where data is collected and used to make informed decisions on funding, backlog of project maintenance, and future project development.
How is HI-FIT different from the Jacob’s study?

Unlike the Jacob’s Study, HI-FIT captures the indoor and outdoor conditions where the Jacob’s study captured the inventory and size of spaces. Jacob’s study data is becoming outdated since it was captured in 2017 and can be viewed on the Schools’ pages on the HI-FIT website
How is HI-FIT different from a detailed inspection from an engineer or specialist?

HI-FIT is an overview of campus conditions that reveal the relationships between various issues and themes throughout the campus; whereas a detailed inspection looks at its specific assignment or project by qualified professional(s).
How is qualitative and quantitative HI-FIT data gathered?

HI-FIT data is gathered by a small team of field technicians that survey every indoor and outdoor space type at a school campus. The team answers questions on a 1-4 (critical to good) integer rating scale based on visible issues and safety. The HI-FIT team also interviews administration on previous/current issues, and these answers are also reflected in the 1-4 integer ratings.
How are HI-FIT scores calculated?

Each HI-FIT question is converted into a weighted calculation that delivers the initial 1-4 rating into a final 1-10 (critical to good) score. To compare multiple sites at once, the HI-FIT scores are averaged across the selected sites and criteria.
